Two Cents About Reply 1988
As someone who doesn’t really dive into Korean television series, binge-watching Reply 1988 within 4 days was such a huge achievement for me. I feel empty after finishing the whole episode… that’s how good that drama is.
The first episode already caught my attention. Reply 1988 is all about the warmth of neighborhood life. Friendship. Family dynamics. Love. Youth. Set in the year 1988, it revolved around five friends and their families living in the same neighborhood of Ssangmun-dong, Dobong District, Northern Seoul. I didn’t find any protagonist character in this drama, all the characters have main portions and important in each scene. The acting of the actor was superb. I felt like I am the part of Ssangmun-dong neighborhood.
I was angry at the end of the episode because Duk Seon and Jung Hwan didn’t end up together. I cried a lot when Jung Hwan confessed his feelings to her, but his friends thought it was only a joke. The worst part is that Jung Hwan said so. Although I knew he did that because he didn’t want to hurt Choi Taek. So heartbreaking. I guessed Jung Hwan loved Duk Seon so much that he settled for being friends just to keep her in his life. Lesson learned from this drama is: if you like someone, go tell her/him. You don’t want to spend the rest of your life regretting things you didn’t have the guts to say, right?
