“If someone asked me to describe the best night I have spent so far in just two words, I’d simply say : Tulus’s gig!”
A good friend of mine told me that Tulus will come to Malang on September 24 for his Sewindu Tour. Sewindu tour is held in five major cities in Indonesia, which began in Malang and ends in Jakarta. This tour marks a concert celebration of Tulus’s 8 years career in the music industry. I, without thinking twice, immediately set an alarm on the day of the ticket purchases. I got to see him live for the first time in 2017 on Line Concert and completely feel beyond delighted as me and the hundreds of people surrounding me sing along with his biggest hit. He sounded exactly the same as his recording music audio, such a rare talent. I went to his concert afterwards in Jazz Traffic 2018 and made a promise to myself that I should go back seeing his concert in the next year.
Let’s do a little throwback in mid July 2019, back when I was still on my internship in Situbondo. I vividly remember that night, my friend sent me information that Tulus along with Glenn Fredly and Kahitna will hold a concert in Surabaya. What a great combination, I murmured. After checked their website, I was glad that entry ticket price is still affordable and relieved to know that the festival tickets were still available so my idea is “ I’m gonna complete the payment on that night “ …. But then I realized I have to transfer 2 hours after I purchased the tickets (yes, you right I don’t have m-banking at that time — but I have it now). Due to the dormitory system that didn’t allow me to go out, so I planned to buy a ticket tomorrow. The next day, festival tickets are already sold out. I cursed myself all day long, I couldn’t sing along Adu Rayu with them. — the show must go on, just a concert, it wasn’t big deal though. That’s why when April asked me to came to Tulus Sewindu tour, it’s totally yes for me! Long story short, we purchased the ticket successfully . The concert held at Graha Cakrawala, Malang University. It began at 8 pm but the gate was open at 6 pm. I went there with April and Athaya. Below here is some highlights from the concert :
8.12 pm — Tulus finally came in and sang ‘Baru”, it taken from his second album titled “Gajah” (officially released on February 2014, my all time favorite album!)
8.18 pm — continued with “Gajah”. The crowd was amazing and we danced happily. I love the way Tulus introduced himself. I mean, who doesn’t know him? yet he still managed to say “Hi everyone, I am Tulus , I am a singer and songwriter. How you guys doing ? The first thing I did when I came here was eating Pecel. Have you guys eaten?” Again, he’s so down to earth. The crowd screamed enthusiastically and answered: “Beluuuum!”. He smiled, said “ I wish by listening to my song, you would feel full”. Nyawww
8.25 pm — “Ruang Sendiri” followed with “Tukar Jiwa”. In the middle of the break, Tulus did chit-chat interacting session with audience. “Guys, I am so nervous! Are you happy?”. I did my best to scream “YES I AM!!!”.
8.41 pm — He sang “Labirin”. Love that song, “Tersesatku di adiwarnamu” Man, why does he always being poetic without trying so hard to make it cringe? Perfect.
8.48 pm — “Monokrom”,“Langit Abu-Abu” and “Tergila-gila”. It’s cute how he always reassured his fans by saying “Are you guys happy?” in every one or two-song ending. Nothing beated the feeling of listening “Langit Abu-Abu” live, it was just perfect. He told us that the goal of this concert is to bring the atmosphere of Monokrom concert on a small scale to some cities. Tulus also showed his suitcase that he always brought when doing a concert abroad. The suitcase is like a silent witness of Tulus’s music career journey so far. He invited his producer Ari Renaldy and the crews who helped him in this tour to the stage.
9.17 pm — I didn’t expect he would sing “Tuan Nona Kesepian”. I just knew that “Satu Hari di Bulan Juni” was a song that Tulus dedicated to his sister. I thought it was for his lover all these times.
9.29 pm — This is the best part: he sang “Adu Rayu” and asked us to sing Glenn’s part. With our pleasure, baby! Oh my goodness, it was just perfect!!! Did I said perfect again? Yes.
9.35 pm — Not to forget, “Teman Hidup”, “Jangan Cintai Aku Apa Adanya”, “Lagu Untuk Matahari” and of course “Sewindu”. I thought not everyone know “Lagu Untuk Matahari”, but I was wrong. Most of the crowd sing their heart out to it.
“Mungkin mereka bulan
Tapi ingat kau matahari
Cahaya mereka darimu”
Dear my fellas, don’t ever doubt your worth! Believe in yourself,ok!
9.55 pm — Tulus sang “Pamit”, the concert atmosphere became gloomy in a real quick.
10.01 pm — He closed the concert with “Manusia Kuat”. As the fireworks went on, the crowd got louder. Tulus and his team thanked everyone in the room for doing their best to make this concert fun. Strangers can stand silent next to each other in an elevator and not even look at each other in the eye. But at the concert, those same strangers could find themselves dancing and singing together like best friends. That’s the power of music.
What a remarkable night! I am happy, everyone is happy! Tulus, you rocked!
